STOMACH ULCERS

Stomach Ulcers, or Peptic Ulcers, are diseases which commonly occur in the gastrointestinal tract,or,commonly known as the digestive system. A stomach ulcer is basically a break in the stomach linen. The stomach linen helps protect the stomach from its own highly corrosive acids. It was commonly thought that stress, smoking and a poor diet were the primary causes of stomach ulcers. However, the Helicobacteri Plyori bacterium (or H.plyori for short) has been scientifically proven to be responsible for up to 60% of stomach ulcers. This type of bacteria inhabits the acidic enviroment of the stomach, and is known to be more common in the developing countries. These ulcers can also be caused or worsened br drugs such as aspirin, Plavix and other NSAID's (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs). Some stomach ulcers can be Ansympyomatic, which is if a patient is a carrier of any disease or infection, but is not suffering from the symptoms.

SYMPTOMS OF STOMACH ULCERS:

Abdominal pain, just below the ribcage

Loss of appetite

Vomiting

Indegestion

Weight Loss

Nausea

Blood in Vomit

Blood present in Bowel motions

Light-Headedness

Stomach Cancer

TREATMENT FOR STOMACH ULCERS:

Medication- Some antibiotics to destroy the H.plyori colony, then some drugs to help the patient recover quickly. Some side affects include diarrhoea and rashes. The ableness of the H.plyori to resist the medication, is becoming more common.

Reducing acid- As the amount of acid in the stomach has a lot to do with the stomach ulcers, special tablets are given to reduce the acid in the gastric juices.

Modifications to the Lifestyle- If the patient is a smoker, then they need to quit smoking. While smoking is bad for the rest of the patients body, it also decreases the natural protection in the stomach and also wekens the healing process.

This picture clearly shows how the Stomach ulcer affects the stomach, and you can imagine what the corrosive acids of the stomach would do to the unprotected stomach.
