Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder, or syndrome, which is most often recognized
by cramping, bloating, constipation and diarrhea.

Causes

Irritable bowel syndrome can have many different causes. There could be problems with a part of the intestine, or maybe the intestine is more sensitive to movement.

Sometimes, even another ailment can cause IBS, for example, after some people had an intestinal infection. If that had happened, it would be called post infectious IBS. There are other ailments which can cause IBS.

About one in six people have IBS.

Symptoms for IBS are different for every person, but the most common symptoms are:

  • abpains.jpeg
    Abdominal Pain

  • imsages.jpeg
    Fullness

  • asdf.jpeg
    Gas
These symptoms most often occur after meals, and often come and go.

People with IBS often change between diarrhea or constipation.

Treatment

There is no cure for IBS, since it is not a disease. But there is treatment. The aim of the treatment is not to cure the ailment, but to relieve the symptoms.

Here are some example of the many treatments of IBS:
  • Lifestyle changes, e.g. regular exercise
  • Dietary changes, e.g. avoid food that stimulate the intestines, avoid large meals, etc.
  • Medication
